Phonics Reading Passages (Level 2)

Teaching phonics is critical for literacy development, as teachers we know how difficult it is to keep young minds interested in learning. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep those young learners engaged and learning, while having some fun! These phonics activities exemplify engaging learning strategies with simple instructions and interactive activities. Note: This post contains affiliate links.

phonics fruit loops

Tasty fruit loops can be used to isolate those target sound groups within a passage. Teachers you can even treat the student to the fruit loops for correct answers! For those that are worried about sugar intake, dabs are just as fun for those target phonics sounds! Finding answers within a text can be tuff! Especially, for new readers highlighting or underlying sections can really “zero in” a child’s focus into a particular phrase in a passage. This is a great tool to help children better comprehend the answer.

Who doesn’t like to talk? If you are a teacher you are probably a great talker! What about your students? Developing fluency is difficult for new readers since they are not only mastering pronunciation; they are also learning new words. The best way I have found to have them develop fluency is to listen to themselves! Many times they self correct and gain more confidence in their reading ability. Check out the whisper phone if you haven’t already!
Look at this cutie pie! She really knows her stuff! To save on paper I use binders and page sliders to store the reading passages for my intervention groups. A really good trick to save paper is to use dry erase markers over a dry erase pocket and the ink rubs right off! It’s a fun way to switch up using the reading passages during small group, intervention, and individual work.

I have a master copy of all my reading passages bound with my home binding machine.

I also have a master copy of each individual phonics skill that include the reading passage and writing activities. If you do not have a binding machine you can glue the covers on a journal or spiral notebook.

Prepping phonics lesson plans can be taxing on a teacher, especially when you are short on time. These interactive notebooks and reading passages really take the extra work away from the teacher. I like to call this “stress free planning.” These activities can be used as many times to meet your classroom needs. We typically use them 2-3 times a week. You can get creative how you use them. You have the option to use as reading passages or as interactive notebook pages, or even mix and match a combination of both. For example, to expand a reading passage, the student can glue a passage into the notebook along side a word list and writing activity.

These are all great ways to really help your young learners to succeed in literacy development. Every child learns differently and these passages can be easily differentiated to meet your students needs.

British reading passages are also included in this bundle!
British (UK) spelling reading passages are linked through Google drive. After purchase please email me and I will send you the files!
